São Conrado Beach
Formerly called Gavea Beach, São Conrado Beach is located in the neighborhood of São Conrado, Zona Sul of Rio de Janeiro. Today, the neighborhood of São Conrado is characterized as one of the noblest districts of Rio de Janeiro, with several buildings and luxurious mansions surrounding the beach.
In contrast, amid the mansions and mountains surrounding the beach, as the Sugar Loaf Hill and the Two Brothers is the Favela da Rocinha. Already regarded as one district, Rocinha has more than 200.000 inhabitants, 2.500 shops, radio stations, concert halls, schools, community newspapers and even a television network.
The beach is about 1km long, is starting the end of Avenida Niemeyer and going to the São Conrado tunnel. The beach of Sao Conrado is characterized by white sand, and soft by strong waves that are the biggest attraction for surfers from the region but, unfortunately, is often unfit for swimming due to pollution.
Other attractions of the region are the Sugar Loaf, which attracts tourists in Rio de Janeiro and other places, and ramps to practice gliding at Pedra Bonita staying and attracts paragliders and hang gliders.
Getting There: Located near the Morro das Pedras Brothers and Gavea and Bonita. By Avenida Niemeyer comes up to her.
What to do: the tip of Sao Conrado Beach is to take the 600-meter stretch of sand and make a nice walk enjoying the beautiful view it offers, or cycle along the bike path that is the margin of it. Not indicated bathe in the sea because the beach itself is not usually because of pollution.
